Fall

Coupland School News--Fall

Fall enrollment was 137, the largest ever. The school library instituted a computer system that allows students to electronically access all library media.

Fall activities included Meet the Teacher night, Grandparents Day, and the Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Coupland teams played volleyball and basketball against other small schools in the area, such as McDade, St. Mary’s in Temple, and Not Your Ordinary School (an Austin charter school). Coupland fields four teams: 5th and 6th grade girls, 5th and 6th grade boys, 7th and 8th grade girls, and 7th and 8th grade boys.

The Middle Schoolers visited the Texas State Fair. Kindergarten through grade 3 visited the Pumpkin Patch in Taylor, and grades 3 and 4 went to the Stiles Foundation Farm. Fourth and fifth graders attended an event at Decker Lake called Native Lands.

The annual Harvest Festival was a big success. Raffle ticket sales totaled $7,000, a record amount. The entire Festival netted $11,500. Specialty baskets put together by the classes were sold in an exciting live auction conducted by Jeff Carter.

The Festival is the Parent-Teacher Club’s biggest fund-raiser. Proceeds are used to buy equipment and supplies for students and teachers, and for work on the school grounds and playground equipment. Coupland School appreciates the continuing support of the community for the Harvest Festival.

On November 18 and 20, Coupland participated in the UIL Contest at Holland. Superintendent Gary Chandler reports that Coupland won 2nd place in Elementary, 4th place in Middle School, and 2nd place overall. Chandler congratulates all participants and says, "This is by far the best we have ever done in a UIL Academic Competition."

The holiday season at the school featured a Christmas food drive and a Book Fair that included a storyteller and RIF book distribution.

The Christmas program featured songs presented by the classes, a special tribute to our troops who were away from home during the Christmas season, and music by Brent Holcomb’s guitar class. Holiday activities finished up with the Middle School Winter Dance, appreciation dinner for teachers and staff, and class Christmas parties.
